Grasshopper on the grass

The next gathering of the Exploring the Power of Voice Meetup Group will be on Friday, January 12, 2018, at A Healing Collective. The theme of this month’s event is adventure, and we’ve taken our title and inspiration from the poem “The Summer Day” by Mary Oliver:

Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

(Read the entire wonderful poem at the Library of Congress web site.)

Every Exploring the Power of Voice gathering is unique, but each event includes activities crafted to help us claim our authentic voices. With sing-alongs, lessons on vocal technique, demonstrations, improv games, and other individual and group exercises, we aim to encourage, energize, and surprise one another—and ourselves. At each gathering, participants will have the opportunity to share our stories in a safe, welcoming environment.

Whether you’re an experienced singer or speaker or a beginner, come join the fun!

Suggested donation: $5. You may use our Contribute page on Meetup.com or contribute by cash or check at the event. We welcome your donation, but it’s not a requirement for participation in our gathering.

Abstract autumn trees

The next gathering of the Exploring the Power of Voice Meetup Group will be on Friday, November 17, 2017, at A Healing Collective. We’ve taken our title and inspiration for the event from these lyrics:

What we know can be,
And everyday, we hope for,
What we still can’t see,
It’s up to us, to be the change,
And even though we all can still do more,
There’s so much to be thankful for.

(from “Thankful” by David W. Foster, Richard James Page, and Carole Bayer Sager, as popularized by Josh Groban)

Superhero girl

The next gathering of the Exploring the Power of Voice Meetup Group will be on Friday, October 20, 2017, at A Healing Collective. We’ve taken our title and inspiration for the event from these lyrics:

No complaints and no regrets
I still believe in chasing dreams and placing bets
And I have learned that all you give is all you get
So give it all you’ve got

(from “Here’s to Life” by Phyllis Jean Molinary and Arthur Butler)

Houston Skyline with Buffalo Bayou

The Houston area faces many challenges in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, but there is joy in knowing that we can count on one another for compassion, strength, and encouragement. For the September gathering of the Exploring the Power of Voice Meetup Group, we’ll come together to share mutual support and to remind ourselves that we are never alone. We’ll raise our voices in a spirit of healing and recovery.

Yellow Warbler (Dendroica petechia) singing his heart out

The heart yearns to be heard and to connect with others. But sometimes our ability to express ourselves is choked by the memory of times when we took personal risks and were shut down.

For the July gathering of the Exploring the Power of Voice Meetup Group, we’ll explore the role of voice as a medium for the expression of deeply felt emotions. We’ll reflect on vulnerability, the critical element in finding relief from our distress and in expressing ourselves authentically. As always, we’ll work—and play!—to create a welcoming community, a safe space in which to share with one another our heartfelt truths.
